Before we begin, we want to give a very special thanks to the North Texas Squad of the 501st Star Garrison for letting us use your photo op background for our interview! You guys are great!
The wonderful thing about the nerdy community is that there are so many ways that you can get involved & find success that there isn’t just one correct formula. For Krystle Starr, for example, while her success in cosplay has gained her plenty of recognition & some opportunities have certainly come from that, her most significant successes have come from her hard work & an innate talent for networking. Beginning by working on her high school newspaper as a way to gain access to the types of events that she enjoyed, she was able to take what she learned & start her own online publication called Nerd Ninja with her friend, Clever Fangirl. From there, she worked her way into the motion capture field with Motus Digital & later with Capture Dimensions. Through all of this, she had the chance to help work on video games & movies like Logan & Passengers. Now, getting to take part in the making of Star Trek Adversaries, she has made her way back to a place where she can be involved in one of the main franchises that got her into nerdom to begin with!
Now, after all that, you may be wondering what exactly has come from her cosplay work & her popularity in the nerdy community. Well, that is where her work with Fan Guru, formally Cosmunity, comes in. For those of you unfamiliar with it, Fan Guru is an app that started off as a way for cosplayers to connect with each other & their fans, but has now turned into a more all encompassing app to help streamline the convention experience for fans of all kinds. Being someone who has been involved with the convention circuit for quite a while, Krystle was a perfect fit for helping the Fan Guru team early on. Since then, she has continued to find opportunities to work as a brand ambassador for several other companies that she has felt a connection to.
However, even after all of that, none of those opportunities quite compare to her work with My Possibilities. For those of you who have not yet had the chance to learn about the wonderful work that My Possibilities does, they are the first full day continued learning program for adults with disabilities (i.e. Autism, Down Syndrome, Aspergers, Prader-Willi, head injuries, etc.). Located in Plano, TX, they provide an opportunity for adults who have aged out of traditional secondary education programs and want to continue learning. While working with the school, Krystle was responsible for teaching art classes, as well as starting the comic book club! Her students were so enamored by the club, in particular, that she was able to help facilitate several visits to Fan Expo Dallas for her class to give them the chance to meet some of their favorite actors & have the full convention experience, like everyone else. Back in 2015, her class even put together an art exhibition for the convention to showcase the incredible work of her students.
Through everything, Krystle has shown that, with hard work & the right community around you, incredible opportunities are out there waiting for you. Personally, I can’t wait to see what’s next for her!
